Luchthavenweg 25, 5657 EA Eindhoven, NetherlandsFacts and History about Eindhoven Airport
Eindhoven Airport, also known by its international airport code of EIN, is located 8 kilometers (13 miles) to the west of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The military uses the airport, but it is also open to the public and functions as a commercial airport.
This Airport in Eindhoven is the nation's second-busiest airport, behind only Schiphol Airport in terms of passenger traffic.
Its facilities include an exchange office, lost property office, luggage lockers, a baby changing area, a health center, and tax-free shops. It also provides a variety of restaurants, bars, and cafes.
Aside from a business center Eindhoven Airport also provides at least 1,500 parking spaces for long- and short-term parking for its clients.
History of Eindhoven Airport
Vliegveld Welschap Airport was established in 1932 as a grass strip (Welschap Airfield). Concerns about an impending war with Germany led the government to purchase the airfield in 1939.
As soon as German troops arrived in Holland, they seized an airport. It was renamed Fliegerhorst Eindhoven and repurposed. The Germans developed and modernized the airport, building three asphalt runways, numerous hangars, and support structures.
During Operation Market Garden, American paratroopers landed and took control of the airstrip. The airport's damage was rectified. Under the designation B-78, the airfield was repurposed by US and British forces to use as an Advanced Landing Ground.
In 1952, the Royal Netherlands Air Force regained control of the airfield. Republic F-84G Thunderjet, Northrop NF-5A/B, and General Dynamics F-16A/B Fighting Falcon crews were all based there. The F-16 of 316 Squadron saw service until April 1994, when it was deactivated.
About Eindhoven
Eindhoven is the Netherlands' fifth-largest city and a municipality in the country's southern region. In 2021, it had a population of 235,923, making it North Brabant's biggest city.
When the Dommel and Gender rivers met, Eindhoven was born. Son en Breugel, Nuenen, Geldrop-Mierlo, Helmond, Heeze-Leende, Waalre, Veldhoven, Eersel, Oirschot, and Best are some of the nearby towns and cities that are within driving distance.
Hendrik I of Brabant awarded city rights to Eindhoven in 1232 when it was a small village located at the junction of the Gender and Dommel rivers. Around 170 dwellings were protected by a rampart in Eindhoven when it was granted its charter. The castle-like structure was situated on an island beyond the city's perimeter.
Moreover, Eindhoven was granted the privilege to hold a weekly market, and farmers in the surrounding villages were compelled to sell their goods there. Location on a commercial route from the Netherlands to Belgium also contributed to its formation.
It was developed on the sand dunes between the Dommel, Gender, and Tongelreep rivers, which is how modern Eindhoven started. River basins have been exploited for housing since the nineteenth century, causing flooding in the city's core occasionally.
After the War, the Gender stream's bed was dammed and filled partly to minimize floods in the city center. Regulations were placed on Dommel's path of travel.
The Dommel's course has been restored to its original state thanks to new ecological and socio-historical findings. The Gender will be reintroduced to the middle of the building.
